World March for Peace & Nonviolence / Dec 2nd
Dear Friend,
Thank you for your continued support of the World March for Peace and Nonviolence. The international team of marchers is arriving in Paris tonight, after 36 days of travel through the South Pacific, Asia and Europe. They have been meeting with heads-of-state, parliamentarians, and peace, disarmament, and religious leaders at each stop (and some of them, like President Zeljko Komsic of Bosnia-Herzegovina who lead the March in Sarajevo, have even joined in). In each place, activities have been organized in support of the March, including local marches, cultural events, and large gatherings. On Wednesday in Prague a crowd of 5,000 people, mostly young, came to Wenceslas Square to greet the marchers and do a karaoke sing-a-long to “Imagine.” (See www.theworldmarch.org for daily updates.)
The marchers arrive here in the US at the end of this month. On December 2^nd , delegations from the base team will travel to Washington DC, San Francisco, Red Bluff CA, Los Angeles and San Juan. We are designating that day “WORLD MARCH USA DAY.” Those who can join us in those cities are encouraged to do so, and those who cannot are asked to organize something locally in support. The March is about giving the opportunity for every person, from any country or culture, to express her or his desire for a world free from nuclear threat, a world where violence of any kind is no longer justified or tolerated as acceptable.
I am attaching a flyer that describes the plans for December 2nd in the US. Please circulate it widely to your lists, to friends, neighbors and colleagues. We hope you will consider organizing an event or act for December 2, of any kind, no matter how small. There are materials on our website that can be used, and a “For Educators” page with helpful ideas and resources. If you can do something, please add it to our website at http://www.worldmarchusa.net/events.php. It would be great for the marchers to see hundreds of events across the country on that day. To many outside US, we are known as the largest producer of weapons and armaments (indeed, we will be spending as much on “defense” next year as the rest of the world combined); let’s show them that Americans are concerned about nuclear disarmament and add our voice to this global call for peace.
Thanks.
In Peace,
Dennis Redmond
